HISTORY
Dayton Historical Society restored this 1900 school that was originally located across the street where the Dayton Post Office is today. The first school in Dayton was located in the Northwest part of the city near Waco Street, but it had a drainage problem and the students couldn’t reach the school when it rained. They decided to move it in 1900.

Land was purchased from the Lowery Estate. The property consisted of the block just north of the school’s present location on 111 West Houston Street. A building was purchased and moved to the southeast corner, which had two rooms and a central hall.

There were two teachers to serve grades 1-7. It opened in September of 1900 with 36 students. By 1910 they had outgrown the building and sold it to two businessmen who moved it to the present site across the street. It was used for rental and as a home for W.B. & Ivy Jamison. A new 2 story brick building was built on it’s old location and provided for grades 1-8.
