MUSEUM
After the Dayton Historical Society purchased the building, they restored it to its original conformation, with the exception of the areas partitioned off across the back of the the 2 classrooms to provide for storage, a restroom, and a kitchenette. A front and back porch were added to give a protected entry.
In the entry is the desk that a long term math teacher, Katie Griffith, used at home to grade all those papers. The picture on the west wall was painted by M.W. Ford, Jr. of Main St. in the 1950's. A wall phone from the turn of the century reminds us of those days of the "Party Line", where 6 or more homes shared a line. The Museum Room is in the east classroom and the west side is used as a Meeting Room.
We have a variety of pictures on display of school groups, businesses, and street scenes throughout the years. There are 3 sizes of student desks which were used for decades. The old radio reminds us of the World War II era when families would sit around the radio to hear President Roosevelt report on the state of the nation. There is a trunk that shows a variety of items that would have been important to families moving to Dayton by wagon or train in the early years. |
